Famous Personalities - Lala Lajpat Rai (1865-1928)

1. A great nationalist and Arya Samaj leader.
2. During the early period of his life he worked for social and educational reforms.
3. Subsequently, he joined the nationalist movement and became a leading extremist leader.
4. He was deported by the British Government on account of his political activities.
5. He went to USA and founded the Indian Home Rule League.
6. In 1920, he became the President of the Special Session of the Congress at Calcutta.
7. He took active part in the non-cooperation movement organized by Gandhi.
8. Servants of The People Society was founded by him in 1921 at Lahore, which was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi.
9. In 1928, while leading a protest procession against Simon commission at Lahore he received lathi blows which caused, serious injuries and ultimately led to his death.
10. He was a well known journalist and a prolific writer.
11. He started a journal entitled Bande Matram. His book is entitled "Unhappy India". Lala Lajpat is popularly known as Punjab Kesari (Lion of Punjab).
